Facebook Takes Scissors to Paper App

Labels: , , , , , ,

Check out my article, Best MLM out there?

Check out my second book, Utilizing IFTTT: For the Marketer, found on Amazon!

Facebook’s stand-alone Paper application, which debuted amid much fanfare in February 2014, will be sent to the recycle bin after July 29.

Paper enabled users to see their Facebook content in themed, customizable sections, and the social network said in a Newsroom post introducing the app:

Your Paper is made of stories and themed sections, so you can follow your favorite interests. The first section in Paper is your Facebook News Feed, where you’ll enjoy inspiring new designs for photos, videos and longer written posts. You can customize Paper with a choice of more than one-dozen other sections about various themes and topics—from photography and sports to food, science, and design. Each section includes a rich mix of content from emerging voices and well-known publications.

Paper was one of the apps developed by Facebook Creative Labs, which was shuttered in December along with three of the other apps it created: Slingshot, Rooms and Riff.

Facebook Creative Labs apps that are still thriving include Facebook Mentions, Groups and Moments.

Paper users saw this message upon logging into the app Thursday:

Thank you for using Paper: In 2014, we launched Paper, a stand-alone app designed to give people a new way to explore and share stories from friends and the sources they care about. Today we’re announcing that we are ending support for the app, and users will no longer be able to log into the app after July 29.

We know that Paper really resonated with you—the people who used it—so we’ve tried to take the best aspects of it and incorporate them into the main Facebook app. For example, the same team that built Paper also built Instant Articles—a fast and interactive experience for reading articles in News Feed—using many of the same tools, design elements and fundamental ideas as Paper. Our goal with Paper was to explore new immersive, interactive design elements for reading and interacting with content on Facebook, and we learned how important these elements are in giving people an engaging experience.

We know not all the features you love will move over to Facebook, but we hope you’ll continue to notice elements from Paper improving the Facebook experience for everyone. We can’t thank you enough for using the app and exploring Paper with us over the past couple of years.

E3 Impressions: Corpse Party 3DS: A Definitively Disturbing Drama

Labels: ,

Corpse Party 3DS | Logo

The legendary horror game returns, this time on the 3DS

The Corpse Party series is pretty infamous and deservedly so. You’ve probably at least heard of the title. So if that’s the case, why are we seeing another release of the first game and on the Nintendo 3DS, of all places? Well the main reason I would assume is to let players who haven’t played the game yet and only own a 3DS a chance to experience it for themselves. Another reason? This could be the definitive version of the game for a few reasons, but first let me explain what Corpse Party is for those of you who don’t know.

Corpse Party 3DS | Loose Board

Heavenly Host Elementary is old and falling apart. You’ll need boards like this to get around to certain places.

Corpse Party is in my opinion an example of a perfect horror story. I ended up having to play through the PSP release and its sequel Book of Shadows in a week to prepare myself for our review of Corpse Party: Blood Drive and that did not seem like work at all. The basic premise is that group of friends stays after school one day to say farewell to a friend of theirs who will be transferring soon. The group decides to do a ritual with a paper doll that will allow them to stay friends forever. You know, kind of a like a good luck charm. However, an earthquake hits, the floor splits open, and suddenly the group finds themselves separated and trapped in the hellish nightmare that is Heavenly Host Elementary. What follows are not happy times. That said, don’t approach this thinking that the game is full of visuals containing blood and gore. It’s not, Corpse Party instead plays on your psychology.

Corpse Party 3DS | Naomi & Seiko

Naomi and Seiko are two of the poor unfortunate souls who sent to Heavenly Host during the ritual. It’s up to you to try and get them back home.

See, I am not a person who likes a lot of horror games as blood and guts just creep me out. It’s one reason I sadly have never played Saya no Uta, I just don’t know if I could take it. Corpse Party though, takes the approach of letting your mind’s eye create the visuals. Yes, people will die, bad things will happen, and you will probably be crying at certain times. But the game lets the narration paint vivid and disturbing pictures of what’s going on. It’s a very effective storytelling method. That’s not to say there aren’t disturbing things that happen. I haven’t even mentioned the “Wrong Ends”

Corpse Party 3DS | Locker Room

Nothing good ever comes from hanging around a locker room in a horror game.

See the game is divided into five chapters. Each chapter is basically a game in itself with its own save files. Your goal is to wander the halls of the school and reach the end of the chapter. This isn’t easy as you’ll need to do some puzzle solving and keep careful track of where you’ve been and where you need to go, all while avoiding certain traps. If you can reach the end, you’ll beat the chapter and move on. Sometimes, though, you’ll reach a Wrong End. These are basically special game overs, and this is where a lot of that descriptive narrative I mentioned comes in. You will cringe as the game describes some of the horrible ways you die. Then there are the times when what’s happening to the sprites on the screen ties into the narrative. Suffice to say, play this one in the dark at your own risk. This does bring me however, to the one of the improvements this time around, the graphics.

Corpse Party 3DS | Sprites

As you can see the sprites look a lot better this time around.

The character sprites this time are improved from their original PC release. When the game was remade for the PSP the backgrounds were touched up, but not the sprites. While it didn’t ruin the game at all, it was kind of noticeable. This time the sprites are touched up as well, which helps them match the scenery a little more. Another addition are four next extra chapters which are unlocked as you progress through the game. The extra chapters in Corpse Party are there to flesh out some of the background elements of the plot and characters. In the PSP release there were ten, this brings to total to fourteen. With all that said, let me give my final thoughts.

Corpse Party 3DS | Magazines

Yes, I will eternally ask why you continue to store bundles of magazines on the floor until you stop.

Despite already having played this game, I am more than willing to plop down the money to play it again. The addition of the new chapters is one reason, but the game is just that good. Despite the fact it can at times be a very depressing tale, there’s an underlying theme of redemption and hope as you get closer to the end. This is also reflected in the soundtrack which will be included with the “Back to School” edition of the game. To me this makes this a must own for any 3DS horror fan, but if you want another take, check out our review of the PSP version of Corpse Party and see why we love this game so much.

999 Possibly being Ported to Vita or Steam

Labels: ,

999_beststory

Today at Anime Expo 2016 our own Azario Lopez asked Zero Escape series director Kotaro Uchikoshi during an interview if there any possibly of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors  being ported to Steam or the PlayStation Vita. He told Azario that he should look forward to Aksys Games panel on Sunday. While this is by no means a confirmation of anything it is definitely an interesting response.

The Aksys Games panel will take place on Sunday at 1:15 PM (PDT). We will have complete coverage  of what is going on at Anime Expo 2016 all weekend long on the site so keep it right here for the latest developments.

E3 Hands On: Does Loading Human Follow Expectations?

Labels: , , , , ,

Loading Human | oprainfall

Loading Human is a VR title that takes place in the 22nd century. You play as a scientist named Prometheus who is tasked by his dying father to recover the most powerful energy source in the universe, called the ‘Quintessence,’ that can reverse the aging process. Each of the game’s levels takes place at a different point in Prometheus’ memories. There are currently three chapters scheduled for this title, and I played a portion of Loading Human: Chapter 1 at E3 this year on the PlayStation VR headset with twin PlayStation Move controllers.

I started the Loading Human demo looking at myself, as Prometheus in a mirror. After shaving my face, I quickly began to explore the abandoned place where I was in and I began to solve puzzles. The two biggest things that struck me all throughout this demo was 1) How I could go anywhere on the map and 2) How I could literally pick up and move anything. The Move Button and the undertrigger button on each controller were the only buttons I needed to use to both move anywhere and to pick up an item. At first, I had a lot of difficulty figuring out how to use the Move controllers to manipulate objects (such as a cane in order to solve a puzzle or how to utilize an electric razor to clean my face), but, by the end of the demo, I had it mostly figured out.

Loading Human | oprainfall

Even in beta, the game environments were amazing to look at.

Loading Human | oprainfall

The first room I walked into as I exited the bathroom where the demo began.

The world and environment, even though this game is still in development, was beautiful. The environments felt realistic and I loved how I could interact with almost anything that I could see. I was picking up everything from books to keycards to opening drawers in random pieces of furniture that had no particular purpose other than to help enliven the game world and add character to it.

The movement system in the game is accomplished by pointing the Move controller in a direction and pressing down a button in order to walk that way. If you want to go another direction, you point in that direction and then hold down the move button again. If you want to turn completely around, you aim the Move controller over your shoulder and click once. It was very intuitive, and I got the hang of it by the end of the demo. Most importantly, I did not feel any symptoms of motion sickness after playing. Moving within Loading Human: Chapter 1 felt fluid and it felt great.

Loading Human | oprainfall
As I solved a series of puzzles throughout the level that ranged from manipulating objects in my environment to figuring out an electrical grid to make all the panel lights come on at once, I delved deeper and deeper until I finally found this girl, Alice, frozen. It was then that the demo unfortunately ended.

Loading Human | oprainfall
For those of you that backed Loading Human on Kickstarter and are wondering if this game is going to live up to what you hoped for, then you are hopefully not going to be disappointed. Loading Human: Chapter 1 is a fantastic blend of both story content and showing the potential of the PlayStation VR, and I personally cannot wait for the game to become available for release.
